About Us

Action for Prisoners’ Families (APF) is the national membership organisation for those interested in the well being of prisoners' families.

Action for Prisoners’ Families (APF) wants ever prisoner's family to get the support they would like and need.

APF works to reduce the negative impact of imprisonment on prisoners' families by:

Producing publications and resources for prisoners' families, children, and for practitioners.

Providing advice, information and training to our members.

Providing our members with opportunities to network to share experiences, concerns and successes.

Listening to prisoners' families and working with them to improve services provided.

Lobbying for improved structures, procedures, conditions and services that affect the well being of prisoners' families.

Promoting best practice.

Campaigning to raise awareness, improve conditions and reduce stigma.

Our work is informed by evidence gathered from our members and from the detailed monitoring of the Prisoners' Families Helpline to ensure it reflects current family concerns.

"She mustn't think we don't love her ... if we don't keep in touch she will think we don't love her and she will harm herself again." (sisters aged 15 and 13, mother in prison.)

Home Office research has found that families are up to six times less likely to reoffend if they maintain strong family ties whilst in prison.
