New prison HMP Thameside opens today

A new prison, HMP Thameside, opens today. Built and run by Serco the new prison is located next to HMP Belmarsh in Thamesmead, London SE28.  As a local Category B prison it will be taking offenders convicted in London courts.

It is expected that the prison will reach its capacity of 900 prisoners by autumn 2012.

It has been reported that prisoners at the new prison will have showers, telephones and IT facilities in their cells (IT and telephone usage subject to the normal restrictions) which will enable prisoners greater chance to stay in contact with their families.
